How to install upvc and other types of patio doors

By admin September 12th, 2009

Installing a patio door is not for the amateur. This renovation project is best left to the skilled diy or the professional builder. Still, a quick overview of the concepts and steps behind its installation is necessary. This will help you understand the process that will be done to your home.

The first step is to measure. Measure the space in the wall where the patio door is to be. If your wall has an existing hole for the door, this will make the process much easier. It will still have to be measured, though. The tools and materials that will be used for this project are a circular saw, a drill, a hammer and nails, screws, some chisels, a pry bar, a level, then the patio door, wood shims, and some silicone caulk. Next, make the necessary hole in your exterior wall. This requires some skill. Things to consider are door placement, size, obstructions such as vent pipes and wires. Then there is the drywall and the insulation to deal with.

Choose your door: there are wooden, aluminum, fiberglass, and upvc patio doors. Upvc is the one most suited to patios. Installing the door requires test fitting it first. Adjustments can be made at this point. Some careful cutting and marking, shimming and caulking will then be done, before the permanent installation. Level and plumb are the main keywords at this point in the process. Fitting, screwing, and nailing are then done.

Now that you have your upvc patio door installed, the finishing touches can be made.
