As traditional light bulbs are finally going to be phased out, everyone needs to seriously think about what they are going to replace them with. Much has been said about the straight swap that people are making between the incandescent bulbs and their more energy efficient replacements. Most of this has unfortunately been negative.

The light isn’t as bright, so these bulbs aren’t ideal for reading or working by. Also, they can take a very long time to heat up and produce their maximum light output. This means that they’re not great for really dark areas of the house, where instant light is needed, and good-quality light at that. Think about the cellar or the attic, for example. You are often only popping up or down to these rooms briefly and yet they’re by far the darkest spots in the house. This means that, ideally, you need instant light that is extremely bright – not exactly attributes of the new energy efficient bulbs.

However, Philips has just launched a new range of LED bulbs which, it claims, provide the same quality and brightness of light as traditional halogen lights. This makes them a real contender for rooms that require bright light in abundance. Halogen lights are often used in kitchens and bathrooms so an energy efficient replacement could be great news for homeowners looking for a like-for-like quality light but with less carbon footprint. These lights are by no means cheap but with an incredibly long life span the initial outlay will be spread out over many years. Add onto that the money you will save on electricity bills and the lower environmental impact, and these could be real contenders for replacement bulbs.

No doubt, more companies will be developing better quality energy saving bulbs in years to come but at least some advancements have already been made and consumers have some degree of choice when it comes to lighting.
