Curtain Fabric and How to Choose it

By admin October 10th, 2009

If you feel it’s time to change your curtains, you should think of the undertaking as an investment as well as an aesthetic change. This is because quality material used in curtains can cost a fair bit of money, so it pays to be careful when you go out to buy them. Below are some things you would need to think about before your purchase.

First of all you will have to take into consideration the amount of light you want or need in the room in question. If you want a room that doesn’t let in too much light in the mornings, for example, then you will have to use thicker material, Hold a sample up against the sun to see how much light gets through. Alternatively you can use black out lining on the back of a pair of curtains.

Secondly you will need to consider the amount of fabric you actually need. In an ideal situation you would measure your windows and then purchase about double the size in width and then a few inches longer in length, although this would largely depend on taste and style.

Next, you might want to consider insulation requirements. The room may be drafty so you could try coated fabric, which is especially apt at reducing the drafts. Obviously ensure there is enough material to adequately cover the window, while you may consider raising the curtain rod a bit higher above the top of the window.

Number four on the list is maintaining the current style of your home when choosing the curtains. Victorian style houses, for example, will benefit greatly from chenille or velvet curtains which offer just the right amount of elegance, while in Georgian properties satin, silk, cotton and chintz all in more subdued colours such as white or grey would be perfect.

Colour is always going to be a huge consideration as well, so identifying which colour schemes work well in a room is just as important as choosing the fabric itself. Furniture colours, as well as the colour of the floor and walls must blend nicely together and will therefore dictate the colour of curtain to use. It may well be worth seeking a professional opinion on this if you don’t trust your own judgement.
