Avoiding And Repairing Coffee Table Rings

By admin October 27th, 2009

One piece of furniture that you and your guests are sure to enjoy is the coffee table. It provides a place to sit drinks and snacks. It can be used for card or board games. This low table is perfect for entertaining guests whenever they visit.

One way to avoid water stains on coffee tables it to have a glass top table. Glass can be easily cleaned and never gets those circular white rings that are common to wood coffee tables. Any ring that does form on the table from a cold drink can be wiped away easily.

Perhaps the glass top table does not fit in your decorating plans. There is still a glass top option for you. Have a piece of glass cut and the edges finished so that they are not sharp to fit your coffee table. Glass allows the beauty of the wood to show but be protected from white water spots. Additionally the glass protects the table from dents if the kids use it to write a note.

If you choose not to use the glass top then you will want to provide each guest with a drink napkin or coaster for their drink. While this often works for a while, invariably eventually you will end up with a water ring on your nice coffee table.

The stain is caused by water getting through the wax on the table to the wood. This breaks the bond of wax to wood and leaves a white mark. Many times the mark can be removed if treated carefully.

Some people use toothpaste to remove these water stains. You will want to get a paste that is not a gel type, but an actual paste. Rub the paste gently into the stain. When you have rubbed it until it is dry, use a damp cloth to remove any residue. Polish the table and it should be as good as new.

Some suggest that you add baking soda to the toothpaste for better results.

If the stain is on dark wood it may be masked using brown shoe polish.

Very fine steel wool (0000) can be used to buff some stains form the table.

Rubbing heats the wax and the moisture seems to evaporate from underneath the finish. Be careful that you do not damage the wood in the process.

Some stains may resist all of the tricks to remove them from the wood. Your only solution may be to remove the former finish and refinish the coffee table.

Removing the finish form a coffee table can be very complicated and may require use of strippers and sand paper. The work should be done in a well ventilated place. Once stripped, the table will need to be stained again. Final finish may be accomplished using a wiping polyurethane. As an alternative you could also use a spray finish. This gives a professional finish without having to have a compressor or air sprayer.

Topping that table with glass sounds like a great idea, don’t you think?
